The AI features say they aren't configured.
That is expected on a fresh install. Vitality ships with no API key — you supply your own. Open Settings (the gear, top right) › AI Features, paste an Anthropic key from console.anthropic.com, and tap Save.
Why do I have to bring my own key?
Because the alternative is worse. A key shipped inside an app can be extracted from it by anyone who downloads it, which means one person’s account pays for everyone’s usage until it is drained. Your key stays in your device’s Keychain, goes only to Anthropic, and Anthropic bills you directly for exactly what you use — we take no cut and add no markup.
What works without a key?
Everything except photo analysis, pantry scanning, and recipe suggestions. Logging meals by hand, the full pantry, workouts, Apple Health, and all the analytics work with no key and no network.
The calorie estimate from a photo looks wrong.
It is an estimate produced by a language model from a photograph, and it can be substantially wrong — portion size in particular is hard to judge from an image. Every detected item is editable before you save, so correct it there. If accuracy matters medically, work from the label rather than the photo.
How are my calorie and macro targets calculated?
From the height, weight, age and activity level you entered during onboarding, using standard formulas, entirely on your device. They are estimates for a generic body. If a clinician has given you numbers, use theirs.
Steps and activity show zero.
Vitality reads those from Apple Health, so it needs permission and it needs Health to actually have the data. Check Settings › Apps › Health › Data Access & Devices › Vitality on your iPhone. Vitality only reads — it never writes to Health.
Can I move my data to a new phone?
Through a device backup — restoring an iPhone backup restores Vitality’s data with it. There is no account and no sync, so a backup is the only route, and we hold no copy. Your API key is deliberately excluded from backups restored onto a different device; paste it again on the new phone.
How do I remove my API key?
Settings › AI Features › Remove key. The AI features stop working; your meals and logs are untouched.
What does Vitality Pro add?
An unlimited pantry — the free tier keeps 25 items — and the month and 3-month analytics windows. The last week is always free, because nobody should have to pay to see what they ate yesterday. It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription, and it unlocks on every device signed in to the same Apple Account.
Is the AI part of Pro?
No, deliberately. Photo scanning, pantry scanning and recipe ideas run on the Anthropic key you supply, and Anthropic bills you for exactly what you use. Charging for access to something we neither host nor pay for would be selling you your own electricity.
