About Ghostmark

Ghostmark renders a live watermark tiled across every connected display, sitting on the desktop behind your app windows. Customize the text and icon, rotation, layout mode, spacing, colors, stroke, and shadow, and drop in {date}, {time}, {datetime}, {user}, or {host} tokens that stay current on their own. Three window levels let you choose whether it hides behind your app windows, floats above them, or stays on top of everything, full-screen apps included. Multi-monitor aware — each display is tracked by its display ID, so rearranging screens rebuilds the tiling correctly.

Behind the build

The first build parked its window one level above CGWindowLevelForKey(.desktopIconWindow), and a screen capture on the development Mac caught it painting on top of a maximized Chrome window instead of behind it.

Apple's own reference says that function is not meant for applications. The level that held is unglamorous: NSWindow.Level.normal.rawValue - 1. The other trap was multi-monitor identity — NSScreen objects can't be relied on across a display change, so the rebuild logic keys off CGDirectDisplayID, not the object.
