About 1on1

1on1 is a messaging app for exactly two people — a partner, a co-founder, one close collaborator. The premise is that a message from that person should not be missable, so it is built to land as a large centered panel over everything else, on a blurred backdrop, until you deal with it. The two ends connect over Multipeer Connectivity on the same WiFi, or through a CloudKit relay when they are apart. You type from a menu bar popover or from Cmd+Shift+1 anywhere, and reply inline from the overlay. Typing indicators, online status, an encrypted history, quiet hours that queue rather than drop, and screenshot sharing are all in scope.

Behind the build

The overlay panel is the hero — an NSPanel with .floating and .nonactivatingPanel style mask, centered on screen with NSVisualEffectView blur behind it.

Messages appear with a spring animation (scale 0.9→1.0 + fade). The 30-second pulse reminder uses a subtle opacity oscillation. CloudKit relay writes messages to a shared CKRecordZone keyed by room code, polling every 2 seconds.
