About PortMap

PortMap is a menu bar app built on lsof: it scans the active TCP and UDP ports and lists them with the protocol, the process holding each one, and its PID. From that list a process can be killed in one click behind a confirmation, localhost:PORT copied to the clipboard, and the ports you care about — 3000, 8080, 5432 — bookmarked so they sit at the top with a green or red indicator whether or not anything is on them. Bookmarks are designed to alert when a port comes online, and the refresh interval is yours anywhere from 1 to 30 seconds.

Behind the build

The core challenge was parsing lsof output reliably — the NAME column format varies between TCP and UDP, between listening and established connections, and between IPv4 and IPv6.

A PortScanner actor shells out to lsof, parses each line after the header, and extracts port numbers from patterns like *:8080, 127.0.0.1:3000, and [::1]:5432.
