One key mutes the mic, and the menu bar tells you which way it is without a test

Shhh is a menu bar utility for muting and unmuting your microphone from a single hotkey. A clear status icon shows whether you're live or muted — red mic-slash when muted, regular mic when active. Mute happens at the hardware level through CoreAudio, and follows along when the input device changes. The icon is the point: you can tell you are muted without unmuting to find out.
Remote workers and anyone on frequent video calls.
